On the Billboard Hot 100, “Causing a Commotion” eventually climbed to No. 2, where it remained for three weeks, first blocked by Michael Jackson’s “Bad” and then Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now.”
As of 2024, it’s ranked as her 12th-biggest Hot 100 hit. It also remains her highest-charting U.S. single without an official music video.
Over time, “Causing a Commotion” has increasingly been viewed as an underrated entry in her catalog and one of the stronger deep cuts from her late-’80s peak.
