Would you hire a humanoid to clean your home? One San Francisco woman did — and after an hour with a Tau Robotics housekeeper, she said the machine did a “solid job” and she did not have to redo any of its work.

Gianna Capezio booked the robot for a one-hour cleaning on August 21. During the visit, it made her bed, cleaned the bathroom and vacuumed her apartment. The price: $30 for the hour.

Thirty Dollars An Hour Sounds Futuristic — Until You Read The Fine Print

Tau Robotics launched its invite-only San Francisco cleaning service in late July, offering selected households a one-hour visit for a flat $30. The company says its humanoids can handle jobs including vacuuming, wiping surfaces, taking out trash and clearing light clutter.

But here is the detail that changes the conversation: the robot is not autonomous. Tau’s own service terms state that a trained human operator controls the machine in real time from the company’s facility, with AI assisting the process.

Capezio Said It Was Slower Than A Human — But The Work Held Up

Capezio told Storyful that the humanoid moved more slowly than she would expect from a human cleaner, but speed was not the only thing she judged. When the hour was over, she said she was satisfied with the results and did not need to go back and redo any of the chores.

That is a meaningful distinction. Humanoid robots have spent years looking impressive in controlled demos. A machine completing ordinary chores in an actual apartment — even with a person operating it remotely — is a much more useful test of whether this technology is ready to leave the laboratory.

The Bigger Question Is Whether You Want A Remote Operator Inside Your Home

The price may be the attention-grabber, but privacy could be the much bigger deciding factor for potential customers. Tau’s service terms say a human operator views the home through the robot’s cameras during the visit and that the cleaning session is recorded continuously.

The company says that footage and operating data are retained to help train its models. Customers must also remain in the home for the visit, and the service is currently available by invitation only.

So this is not quite Rosie from The Jetsons independently showing up with a feather duster. Not yet. It is closer to a remotely operated humanoid worker whose real-world cleaning sessions are also helping teach future versions how to do more on their own.

Would You Let A Humanoid Robot Clean Your Home?

For $30, Capezio got an hour of cleaning she considered good enough to leave untouched. The tradeoff is that today’s service still requires a human in the loop and cameras inside the home. That makes this less a simple robot-vs-human-cleaner question and more a preview of how domestic automation may actually arrive: gradually, awkwardly and with a lot of fine print.
