Nanny McPhee Is Finally Trading The Screen For The Stage

Emma Thompson has been living with Nanny McPhee for more than two decades, and now the knobbly stick, magical lessons and gloriously unruly children are finally headed somewhere that feels almost suspiciously perfect: the London stage.

A brand-new Nanny McPhee musical will receive its world premiere in summer 2027, with Thompson herself writing the book and co-writing the lyrics alongside singer-songwriter Gary Clark, who is composing the music. The production will be directed by Katy Rudd, whose credits include The Ocean at the End of the Lane and Ballet Shoes.

Emma Thompson Says Theatre Feels Like Nanny McPhee’s Natural Home

Thompson is not exactly hiding her excitement. In announcing the musical, she said she has lived with Nanny McPhee for so long that seeing the character finally “tread the boards” feels supremely exciting. Her reasoning is delightfully on-brand too: theatre gives the story’s magic, music, mischief and danger a chance to happen right in front of the audience.

And honestly, she has a point. Nanny McPhee was always theatrical before it was officially theatre. The heightened costumes, transformations, unruly children, physical comedy, magical interventions and storybook menace were practically waiting for somebody to put footlights under them.

The Musical Goes Back To The Brown Family’s Original Chaos

The new production returns to the basic setup audiences know from the first film: the mysterious Nanny McPhee arrives at the Browns’ home to find a household in complete disarray, including children who have already driven away every nanny before her, a desperate father, an out-of-control donkey and a baby determined to contribute to the chaos.

Armed with her strange stick, unconventional methods and quite a lot of magic, Nanny McPhee begins restoring order — although, as always, the children are not the only people in the house who need to learn something.

The Creative Team Is Built For Big, Weird Stage Magic

Thompson and Clark are surrounded by a team with serious theatrical muscle. Rob Howell, the Tony and Olivier Award-winning designer behind Matilda the Musical, is handling sets and costumes, while Ellen Kane choreographs. Simon Hale provides orchestrations, Nigel Lilley handles music supervision, and the two share music-arrangement duties.

The production also has Chris Fisher on illusions, Samuel Wyer on puppetry and Andrzej Goulding on projections — which tells us plenty about how seriously the team is taking the magical side of the assignment. This is not shaping up to be three chairs, a broom and somebody yelling “imagine the donkey.”

Working Title Films and Universal Theatrical Group are behind the production, bringing the property full circle after Working Title first brought Thompson’s adaptation to cinemas in 2005. That film starred Thompson alongside Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Kelly Macdonald, Imelda Staunton and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, followed by the 2010 sequel Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.

This Musical Has Actually Been Brewing For Years

The West End move may sound sudden, but the musical itself is not brand-new. Thompson first revealed plans for a stage adaptation years ago, and the project has been developing in the background ever since. What has changed now is that the production finally has a real arrival window: summer 2027.

What we do not have yet is just as important: no theatre, exact performance dates or cast have been announced. And despite Thompson’s deep connection to the character, there is currently no announcement that she will reprise Nanny McPhee onstage. For now, she is very much the writer helping build the character’s next incarnation from behind the curtain.

Still, after twenty years of Nanny McPhee existing mostly as one of those wonderfully specific film characters we assumed belonged permanently to another era, seeing her get an all-new life feels right. A musical nanny with a magic stick, frightening children into becoming better people while everybody sings? The West End practically owes her a dressing room.
