Barbara Eden Was Already Working Before Jeannie Ever Blinked Into Television History
Born August 23, 1931, in Tucson, Arizona, Eden began her career as a singer and performer before television turned her into a household name. Early screen work included appearances on series such as Father Knows Best, Gunsmoke and The Andy Griffith Show, along with a starring role in the television adaptation of How to Marry a Millionaire.
She also made the leap to film, appearing opposite Elvis Presley in 1960’s Flaming Star and later in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and other studio-era features.
I Dream of Jeannie Made Her a Forever TV Icon
Then came 1965 and the role that changed everything.
As the title character on I Dream of Jeannie, Eden starred opposite Larry Hagman as astronaut Major Anthony Nelson. The series ran for five seasons through 1970 and transformed Eden into one of the defining faces of 1960s television.
Jeannie was playful, glamorous, quick-witted and frequently several steps ahead of everybody around her. Eden’s performance made the character feel bigger than the show itself — the kind of television creation that survives endless reruns, Halloween costumes, convention appearances and generations of viewers discovering the series long after its original run.

She Never Stayed Inside the Bottle
Eden kept working long after I Dream of Jeannie wrapped. She starred in the 1978 film Harper Valley PTA and its television spinoff, continued appearing in movies and television projects, toured in stage productions and remained a regular presence at fan events.
She also reunited professionally with Hagman after Jeannie, including appearances on Dallas and stage performances of Love Letters. In 1988, Eden received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2011 she published her memoir Jeannie Out of the Bottle.
That is a lot of life around one role that could easily have swallowed an entire career. Eden instead made peace with the character, embraced the fans and turned Jeannie into a lifelong calling card rather than something she needed to outrun.
