There are interviews, and then there is Juliette Lewis casually opening the vault on Cape Fear, a lost Beetlejuice audition, Britney Spears and one especially unhinged viral car video. The multi-talented actor and musician sat down with Gayety while promoting Apple TV’s new Cape Fear series, and naturally the conversation refused to stay in just one decade.
Lewis’ return to the Cape Fear universe is a true full-circle Hollywood moment. She earned an Academy Award nomination for playing Danielle Bowden in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 film, then re-entered the story 35 years later as Crystal Cady, a newly created character with direct ties to Javier Bardem’s Max Cady. Apple TV’s 10-episode limited series is now approaching its July 31 finale.

Then came the casting confession. Lewis revealed that she once auditioned for Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice, the role that ultimately went to Winona Ryder. Looking back, Lewis laughed that she was blonde at the time and completely wrong for the part. Somewhere in an alternate Tim Burton universe, however, Juliette Lewis is still floating above a dinner table while Harry Belafonte blasts in the background.

She also reflected on working around Robert De Niro, Jessica Lange and Nick Nolte as a teenager, saying she now prefers to lead younger actors by example rather than hand out advice.
She even broke down one of her wildest scenes opposite Bardem, revealing that a dramatic spit moment was actually created with air while Bardem sold the reaction.
