Love, Astronomy and Edwardian Expectations Collide Under Halley’s Comet

Adapted from Virginia Woolf’s early novel, the film follows Katharine Hilbery, a passionate young astronomer determined to avoid the tidy romantic future society has already selected for her.
Set against London in 1910 and the arrival of Halley’s Comet, the story places scientific ambition, unwanted courtship and crumbling Edwardian patriarchy on one increasingly crowded collision course.

Haley Bennett leads the ensemble as Katharine, whose ordered life becomes considerably less manageable once love, family pressure and intellectual freedom begin pulling her in different directions.
Jack Whitehall plays would-be poet William Rodney, while Lily Allen appears as Mary Datchet. The cast also includes Elyas M’Barek, Jennifer Saunders and Timothy Spall, turning Woolf’s social comedy into a properly crowded drawing room of competing desires and expectations.
Gharavi’s adaptation pushes astronomy to the center of Katharine’s yearning, giving the heroine’s search for independence a literal view toward the stars. The result looks less interested in presenting Woolf as precious literary homework and far more interested in the humor, friction and very modern rebellion already sitting inside the story.
There are grand rooms, impossible men, sharp women and enough romantic confusion to keep everyone circling one another until the Edwardian rules begin to crack.
