Brit comedian Romesh Ranganathan is asking the people one enormous question: “What has the BBC ever done for me?”

The answer arrives as a delirious four-minute musical tour through the broadcaster’s past, present and very crowded address book. It all begins inside EastEnders’ Queen Vic pub, where Coldplay’s Chris Martin takes a seat at the piano and sends Romesh hurtling into a full BBC fever dream.

From Albert Square to Casualty, BBC News, Radio 1Xtra, Graham Norton’s studio, Wimbledon and the ballroom of Strictly Come Dancing, the campaign film keeps changing channels before Romesh can catch his breath.

The film is directed by Dougal Wilson, whose eye for playful spectacle turns the BBC itself into one giant connecting corridor. Sets, studios, radio booths, news desks and fictional worlds bleed into one another as Romesh searches for a straight answer and instead receives roughly ninety of them.

Among the blink-and-you-miss-them appearances are Alan Carr, Claudia Winkleman, Graham Norton, Clive Myrie, Sara Cox, Adam Woodyatt, David Jason, Ruth Jones as Nessa, Anton Du Beke, Mr Tumble, Louis Theroux and enough Dalek activity to make the licence fee discussion briefly feel like an intergalactic emergency.

There are also nods to Hey Duggee, Children in Need, the Shipping Forecast, BBC Cymru Wales, Glastonbury, Wimbledon, Radio 1Xtra, BBC News and the countless programmes that have become shared British reference points across generations.

The campaign revives the spirit of the BBC’s celebrated mid-1980s film starring John Cleese, itself playing on the famous Monty Python’s Life of Brian question, “What have the Romans ever done for us?” This time, the wording becomes more personal—and the answer becomes a musical argument for public broadcasting.

Romesh is an ideal guide because he can sell the affection without becoming unbearably sincere. He looks increasingly bewildered as the production grows around him, giving the entire thing the rhythm of a man who asked one sarcastic question and accidentally triggered the BBC multiverse.

The most pointed moment belongs to Louis Theroux, who reminds viewers that none of this automatically has to exist. That line gives the shiny cameos and rapid-fire nostalgia a sharper edge: the film is not only celebrating what the BBC has made, but arguing for what could disappear without continued public support.

“There is a BBC for each of us, funded by all of us. This is our BBC.” That is the official closer—and after four minutes of pubs, piano, newsrooms, Daleks, dancing and Nessa, Romesh has certainly been given an answer.
