Six Tracks, Zero Interest in Staying in One Lane

This week refuses to sit still. REESE and Futosé kick the door open with UK-garage pressure, Snakehips and Austin Millz hand Tkay Maidza a club-ready runway, Snooper ricochets straight into electronic chaos, and then Snow Patrol with Kylie Minogue, Tasha and The Flints pull the set into altogether different corners. Six tracks, six moods, one very INYIM reason to keep digging.

THEE DIG OF THE WEEK

Artist: REESE x Futosé
Tune: “Get On Up”
WHY IT MADE THE CUT
REESE and Futosé come in swinging with a 138-BPM UK garage/bassline burner that wastes absolutely no time getting to the point. “Get On Up” is built for movement: clipped vocal hooks, rubbery low-end pressure and the kind of momentum that sounds equally at home rattling a club system or rescuing a dead afternoon. No elaborate setup required — just hit play and let the thing move.

Artist: Snakehips & Austin Millz feat. Tkay Maidza
Tune: “PLZ HOLD”
WHY IT MADE THE CUT
Snakehips and Austin Millz take a reworked nod to 1975’s “Hi-Jack” and flip it into something leaner, brighter and made for right now. Then Tkay Maidza arrives with exactly the vocal presence this kind of production needs — quick, cool and completely unbothered. “PLZ HOLD” works because nobody overplays their hand; the groove stays loose, the beat stays sharp and Tkay glides straight through the middle of it.

Artist: Snooper
Tune: “Recess”
WHY IT MADE THE CUT
Snooper’s “Recess” sounds like somebody gave their already-fidgety punk brain an electronic sugar rush. The Nashville crew trade some of their usual garage-punk attack for a frantic beat-driven sprint inspired by Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss”, turning the countdown to recess into two-plus minutes of nervous-system music. It is ridiculous in precisely the right way — twitchy, playful and impossible to mistake for anybody else.

Artist: Snow Patrol & Kylie Minogue
Tune: “These Alarms”
WHY IT MADE THE CUT
This one had Kylie’s name on it before Kylie was even on it. Gary Lightbody originally wrote the song with Kylie Minogue in mind, and Snow Patrol recorded an earlier version under the working title “KYLIE” before deciding something rather obvious was missing: Kylie herself. The completed duet earns the wait. “These Alarms” pairs Snow Patrol’s big-hearted melancholy with Kylie’s unmistakable clarity without forcing either artist to become the other.

Artist: Tasha
Tune: “Special”
WHY IT MADE THE CUT
Tasha slows the pulse without losing the detail. “Special,” from You Are Spring!, is arranged with the patience of somebody who knows softness can carry plenty of weight, and it also marks Tasha’s clarinet debut. Guitar, piano, synth, bass and clarinet gather around her voice without crowding it. After the nervous energy elsewhere in this week’s six, this one feels like opening a window.

Artist: The Flints
Tune: “The Time Is Now”
WHY IT MADE THE CUT
Manchester twins George and Henry Flint close the six with “The Time Is Now,” a track from Jewel Of The North that folds their spaced-out psych-pop instincts into the glow of classic ’70s disco. The hook keeps circling back to urgency — light, sound, touch, now — while the production makes everything feel just hazy enough around the edges. A very tidy way to end a week that never once bothered picking a single genre.
