2023 Latin Grammy Nominations Have Arrived! W/ Shakira, Christina Aguilera Among Artists Leading This Year.

"The nominations for the 2023 Latin Grammys are here — and though the award show is undergoing big changes by switching up its venue and heading to Spain this November, the contenders in each category are pretty familiar to the Latin Recording Academy. Major pop acts and Latin Grammy veterans make up a lot of the big categories here: The Mexican American songwriter and producer Édgar Barrera leads the tally with 13 nods, much of it for his work with Camilo and Grupo Frontera. Camilo, along with Shakira, Karol G, and songwriter Keityn, follow Barrera with seven nominations each.

Barrera has been a perennial favorite at the Latin Grammys; his past credits include Maluma’s “Hawái”and “Vida de Rico” with Camilo. His sound, a mix of hook-driven pop with a hint of música Mexicana flair, has proven to be a popular among voters, satisfying both commercial impulses and a frothier, traditional pop style. Elsewhere, several stars secured yet another nomination: Shakira has the second-most Latin Grammys of any female artist, and she won nods in several categories, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for her viral smash “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.” Karol G, who’s experienced a career peak over the last couple of months, was recognized for her star-making album Mañana Será Bonito.

Still, there are small surprises in certain categories. Best New Artist features several women making waves in different genres, among them música Mexicana newcomers Conexión Divina and the Puerto Rican pop-rock sensation Gale. The Best Rap/Hip Hop Song category features 17-year-old Dominican breakthrough act J Noa, who turned heads with her EP Autodidacta. Other old-school hip hop figures are honored in urban and rap categories: Akapellah, who’s consistently made some of the best rap in Spanish, got recognized for his album Xtassy, while Tego Calderon and Vico C are up for Best Reggaeton Performance and Best Rap/Hip Hop Song, respectively. Still, they feel siloed into these categories: The Big Four still elide hip hop and rap figures.

Between Barrera’s nomination sweep and recognition for “Ella Baila Sola” and “x100to,” the Latin Grammys do recognize what a powerful year música Mexicana. Check out the list of nominees below.
