History:

  • Invented: 1931 by Luke Weisgram
  • Company: The Sweets Company of America (later renamed Tootsie Roll Industries in 1969)
  • Inspiration: Weisgram combined his daughter’s lollipop with a Tootsie Roll, creating the iconic candy

Famous Commercial:

Tootsie Pops are famously associated with the question, “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?” This catchphrase originated from a 1969 animated commercial featuring a boy, a cow, a fox, a turtle, and the wise Mr. Owl
