Scientists exploring the deep waters off California’s coast have confirmed a tiny new species of snailfish — and it’s capturing attention not just for its scientific value, but for its downright adorable appearance.
Nicknamed the Bumpy Snailfish (Careproctus colliculi), this pink, jelly-like creature was first spotted in 2019 by researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). But only now, in 2025, has it been officially recognized as a new species.
With its big round head, large eyes, and soft bumpy skin, it looks like a Squishmallow crossed with a sea sprite — a gooey little marvel of evolution that’s already being affectionately called “Greg” by fans online.
Fresh music, bold entertainment, and men’s fashion—one tight email a week.

Discovered over 10,700 feet below the surface near Monterey Canyon, Greg is the new fish on the California block, and he’s stealing hearts across both the scientific and pop culture spectrum.
