Twenty-five years later, the Glitter lambs are getting “Loverboy” back in proper clarity.

We were up with 130 other Mariah fanatics sitting in the YouTube waiting room for the newly restored 4K version of Mariah Carey’s “Loverboy (Remix)” to drop. Why? Because we live and love it!
And now that it has arrived: the restoration is pristine. The candy-colored chaos finally has the sharpness, color and detail it deserves again — bright blue skies, hot pink racing looks, chrome, cars, crowds and all. It feels much closer to that crisp, glossy MTV image we remember seeing when these videos were actually new.

As Glitter turns 25, the remix featuring Da Brat, Ludacris, Shawnna and Twenty II is back in the conversation again, while Mariah’s official store is celebrating the album with new 25th-anniversary vinyl editions due around October 30.

David LaChapelle Built the Candy-Colored Raceway Fantasy
This was never a visually shy video. David LaChapelle directed both the original “Loverboy” clip and its remix version, filming at the LA County Raceway in May 2001. The shoot was documented for MTV’s Making the Video, and the original clip premiered on June 8, 2001 — peak-era MTV, when a music-video premiere still felt like an event.
LaChapelle’s fingerprints are everywhere: hyper-saturated color, pop-art exaggeration, cars treated like candy, bodies posed like advertising, and a racing-world fantasy pushed just far enough past reality to become pure camp. Mariah herself once joked that the loose concept was basically LaChapelle turning her into his fantasy version of a hubcap sales girl.
The remix version folds Da Brat, Ludacris, Shawnna and Twenty II into that world, while Cameo’s Larry Blackmon and Tomi Jenkins are part of the broader “Loverboy” visual universe. Rather than shooting a restrained companion piece, the remix keeps the same maximal visual language and lets the guest verses ride through it.
The styling plays directly into that LaChapelle fantasy: checkerboard racing motifs, tiny shorts, bright pink zip-front looks, bandana-style tops, towering heels, bleached-blonde hair and enough glossy color to make the whole thing feel like a pop magazine exploded at a speedway. A reliable original wardrobe-stylist credit is not consistently preserved in the public production credits we could verify, so we are not going to invent one 25 years later.

“Loverboy” Is One of Glitter’s Loudest, Strangest and Most Underrated Moments
Originally released in 2001, “Loverboy” was the lead single from Glitter, with the remix pulling Da Brat, Ludacris, Shawnna and Twenty II into the mix. The single climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, even as the entire era was being swallowed by a much bigger story around Mariah at the time.
Years later, the music itself has had the last laugh. Glitter has developed the devoted following it deserved, and Mariah is now openly celebrating the album rather than leaving it trapped inside the baggage of 2001.

And Please, Keep Restoring the Classic Videos
This part matters almost as much as the anniversary itself. So many classic music videos are still sitting online in painfully poor quality — soft, muddy, over-compressed uploads that look nothing like the videos we actually watched when they were new.
That is why it is genuinely great to see Mariah’s team continuing to update her classic visual catalog. Every proper restoration helps undo the years when landmark music videos were reduced to whatever low-resolution file happened to survive the early streaming era.
We want these videos MTV-clear again — the way they looked back in the day when they came roaring through a proper television feed, not like a third-generation VHS rip somebody uploaded in 2007. And “Loverboy” is exactly the kind of maximal, colorful video that shows why restoration matters.
The difference is all over these frames. Faces are cleaner without losing their natural texture, the reds and pinks no longer smear into the background, the bright-blue skies hold their detail, and even the crowded party shots have room to breathe. This is how a classic video should come back.

Glitter at 25 Is Finally Getting the Celebration It Deserves
As Glitter turns 25, the remix featuring Da Brat, Ludacris, Shawnna and Twenty II is back in the conversation again, while Mariah’s official store is celebrating the album with new 25th-anniversary vinyl editions due around October 30.
That makes the restored “Loverboy (Remix)” feel less like random catalog cleanup and more like part of the proper reappraisal this era has been waiting for. Back then, Glitter became a punchline almost overnight. Twenty-five years later, people are sitting in a YouTube waiting room before sunrise for a 4K restoration — and then combing through the pristine frames once it drops. Oh, how the glitter turns.

For longtime lambs, that may be the sweetest part of this anniversary run. Nobody has to pretend 2001 never happened. Just restore the music, restore the visuals, put them back in front of people at the quality they deserve and let the work speak for itself.
