Zephyring Back to the Album That Put “Pony” in Motion

Zephyring 30 years back, Ginuwine unleashed his debut album Ginuwine… the Bachelor, introducing the world to one of the era’s most unmistakable R&B records: “Pony.”
Released on October 8, 1996 through 550 Music and Epic, the album paired Ginuwine with Timbaland at exactly the moment both were helping bend mid-’90s R&B into something stranger, sharper and more futuristic.

Ginuwine... the Bachelor Turns 30
Ginuwine’s debut album introduced 'Pony,' one of the defining R&B singles of the 1990s, and helped launch a major new chapter for Timbaland’s production sound.

“Pony” Was the Door-Kicker
Produced by Timbaland, “Pony” climbed to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Ginuwine’s signature breakthrough. That warped bass line, clipped rhythm and barely-contained sensuality still sound instantly recognizable three decades later.
The album itself kept moving long after the single broke through. Ginuwine… the Bachelor reached the Top 30 of the Billboard 200 and eventually earned double-platinum certification in the U.S., cementing Ginuwine as one of the defining male R&B voices of the late 1990s.
And “Pony” Never Really Left
“Pony” has continued to live on through samples, interpolations, films, television and a whole lot of dance floors. Its afterlife is part of what makes the anniversary hit differently: the song did not simply survive the ’90s — it became shorthand for a certain kind of slinky, mechanical R&B groove.
Thirty years later, the debut still feels like an arrival point. Ginuwine had the voice and presence, Timbaland had the sonic architecture, and together they made one of those records where you can hear a new lane opening in real time.
