Momma Madonna Is Running This VMAs Rehearsal Like Clockwork

MTV finally does something right: Madonna has dusted off the spirit of Making the Video for a behind-the-scenes look at the painstaking construction of her 2026 MTV Video Music Awards performance — and, naturally, momma is in full control.
The four-minute short plays less like a polished victory lap and more like a working document. Madonna is checking lights, blocking bodies, listening to monitors, questioning costumes, watching entrances and exits, and stopping anything that does not look or feel exactly right. At one point she deadpans, “This is a professional operation” — which pretty much sums up the entire mood.

The performance itself marked Madonna’s first VMAs performance in 23 years, with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli xcx joining the opening number. But the new rehearsal film is far more interested in the machinery underneath the spectacle: the hundreds of tiny cues that have to hit at once before anything can look effortless on television.
That machinery is exactly what Madonna keeps prodding. She wants stronger light. She wants the stage picture narrower. She wants to hear herself properly. She rejects a cowboy hat because, as she tells one performer, it reads a little too Village People. Nothing escapes inspection, including a moment when she announces, “I can’t do this anymore,” only to keep right on doing it.

The most revealing bit comes when the staging is described as a kind of clockwork made from hundreds of actions — sexy, dirty, funny, all folding into one another while Madonna and Charli lead the movement through the space. That is the real pleasure of the clip: seeing how the looseness of a club scene is actually built with almost obsessive precision.

And yes, there is still humor in the middle of the stress. “Spinning toilet moment.” “I forgot to blush.” A threat to vomit immediately followed by an apology. By the time someone declares, “Everyone here is a work of art,” the film has already shown why Madonna’s rehearsals remain their own form of theater.
