Come Thru Vocals Monday: Gilla Band “Placeholder” + Good Neighbours “Mary Jane”

Gilla Band turn childhood memories into jagged noise on “Placeholder,” while Good Neighbours capture the awkward rush of attraction on “Mary Jane.”

Monday Gets Nervy With Gilla Band, Then Sweetly Unsettled With Good Neighbours

Come Thru Vocals new music discoveries selected by INYIM Media

Gilla Band turn anxious memory into jagged noise on “Placeholder,” while Good Neighbours chase infatuation around the room on “Mary Jane.” Both songs live in slightly off-balance emotional territory — one twitchy and abrasive, the other bright on the surface but caught in that awkward space between attraction and knowing what to do with it.

Two tracks. Two discoveries. One daily detour.

Come Thru Vocals is INYIM’s long-running daily music discovery series spotlighting voices and songs worth hearing. Selections may also move into Musique Dig’s Weekly Playlist and rotation on INYIM Radio.

WHY IT CAUGHT OUR EAR

“Placeholder” pulls from Dara Kiely’s childhood creature comforts and anxieties — Big Brother, Power Rangers, too much Coldplay — and turns them into exactly the kind of wired, off-kilter Gilla Band track we want on a Monday. It sits near the front of Pugnello, the Dublin quartet’s fourth album, released September 25 through Rough Trade and produced by the band themselves.

WHY IT CAUGHT OUR EAR

Good Neighbours call “Mary Jane” a step toward a new sound, written in about an hour while they were finishing “Superstar.” Where that earlier single captured the rush of catching feelings, this one sits in the messier second chapter: being completely drawn to someone and having absolutely no idea how to approach them. Released August 28 via Polydor, it keeps the duo’s big-pop instinct while letting the edges feel a little rougher and more restless.

Come back for the next daily detour. Keep discovering in the Come Thru Vocals archive, hear the week’s six strongest finds in Musique Dig’s Weekly Playlist, and keep the music moving on INYIM Radio.
