Mr. Belding has left Bayside High for good.
Dennis Haskins, the actor who made Principal Richard Belding one of television’s most recognizable school administrators, has died at 75. For Gen X and older millennials raised on Saved by the Bell, he wasn’t simply the guy standing between Zack Morris and whatever scheme had taken over Bayside High that week. He was part authority figure, part exasperated straight man and, more often than the kids wanted to admit, part of the heart of the show.
Haskins’ death was confirmed by his longtime representative, Jay Schachter, on Sept. 28. A cause of death has not been officially announced. A tribute shared by Burbank’s former Dimples Karaoke, where Haskins had long been a familiar face, said the actor had privately lived with Parkinson’s disease and other health concerns for years. That disclosure should not be treated as an official cause of death.
Haskins first stepped into Belding’s office in Good Morning, Miss Bliss in 1988, before the concept was reworked into the NBC Saturday-morning phenomenon Saved by the Bell. He stayed with the character through the original Bayside years and later became a central carryover presence on Saved by the Bell: The New Class, keeping Belding behind the principal’s desk well into the franchise’s next generation.
And then there was the line. You know the one. “Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?” It usually arrived seconds after Zack, Slater, Screech or the rest of the gang had pushed one plan too far. What could have been a one-note authority role became something warmer in Haskins’ hands. Belding could be ridiculous, stubborn and hopelessly uncool, but the joke rarely erased the fact that he actually cared about his students.
His connection to Saved by the Bell also outlived the final bell. Haskins embraced the character long after other actors might have run from the role that defined them. He appeared at fan events, leaned into the nostalgia and returned as Belding for reunions and comedy appearances, including the much-loved 2015 Tonight Show Bayside reunion with Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley.
Haskins is also the second member of the original Saved by the Bell principal cast to die. Dustin Diamond, who played Samuel “Screech” Powers, died on Feb. 1, 2021, at age 44 after being diagnosed with stage 4 small cell carcinoma just weeks earlier. Diamond had played Screech across multiple versions of the franchise for more than a decade, making his death the first major loss from the core Bayside ensemble.
That affection apparently went both ways. Schachter remembered Haskins as someone who genuinely loved meeting fans and always made time for them. It helps explain why Belding remained such a strangely comforting piece of ’90s television: the character never felt like somebody Haskins was embarrassed to have played.
His career stretched well beyond Bayside, with appearances across television and film including The Dukes of Hazzard, The West Wing, Mad Men, Hot in Cleveland, New Girl and A Million Ways to Die in the West. But Belding remained the role audiences carried with them.
There is even a physical piece of that legacy preserved in Haskins’ hometown. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga holds his collection of Good Morning, Miss Bliss and Saved by the Bell scripts, including revisions, production schedules and a suit worn by Haskins as Mr. Belding. Not bad for a fictional principal who spent most of his working day trying to figure out what, exactly, was going on here.
