Robert Irwin is teaching the world how to speak fluent Aussie

Aussie cutie patootie conservationist Robert Irwin has joined forces with Qantas to help sell the world on Australia — and apparently that means teaching international travelers how to stop saying “gas station” and start saying servo.
The new “Australia in the Sky” campaign pairs Irwin’s unmistakably Australian charm with the country’s flag carrier, leaning into the idea that the trip Down Under should start feeling Australian before passengers even land.
One of the campaign’s cheekier bits puts Robert through a rapid-fire translation lesson between American and Australian lingo. “Vacation” becomes holiday, a “pickup truck” becomes a ute, a “pacifier” becomes a dummy, and “hey buddy” is naturally upgraded to g’day mate. Very educational. Very important international diplomacy.
And then there are the Roberts. Many Roberts. A whole cabin of Robert Irwin clones appears as part of the campaign imagery, which frankly sends our imaginations running a little too freely. One Robbie is charming enough. An entire business-class section of them feels almost irresponsible.
Behind the joke is a straightforward tourism push. Qantas and Tourism Australia are promoting travel into the country alongside Qantas Explorer, which gives eligible international travelers access to discounted domestic fares when they add Australian destinations to the same itinerary. Qantas currently promotes Explorer access to more than 45 destinations within Australia.

The pairing makes obvious sense. Irwin has spent his life representing Australian wildlife and conservation to an international audience, first through Australia Zoo and increasingly through television and social media. Qantas, meanwhile, is leaning hard into Australian identity as part of the onboard experience — from food and wine to cabin service and destination marketing.
The campaign also plays with one of Robert’s easiest superpowers: making Australian slang sound like something the rest of us urgently need to learn. He has already turned “arvo,” “dunny,” “ripper” and “fair dinkum” into social-media lessons before, so putting him to work as an unofficial translator for Qantas feels less like casting and more like inevitability.
