Robert Eggers is heading back into the dark, and this time he’s dragging us straight into 13th-century England with Werwulf.
The latest trailer puts Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp at the center of what Focus Features calls a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within. Translation: exactly the kind of grim, atmospheric nightmare we expect when Eggers starts digging around in old-world folklore.

Eggers directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Sjón, reuniting with the kind of period detail, dread and mythic menace that have become signatures of his work. Focus Features is keeping the plot details tight, but the new trailer makes one thing very clear: this is not the cuddly kind of werewolf story.
What Is ‘Werwulf’ About?
Set in 13th-century England, Werwulf is a werewolf horror tale built around devotion, damnation and the darkness lurking within. Focus Features is deliberately keeping the fuller plot under wraps, leaving the trailer to tease the film’s medieval world, supernatural dread and the human horror at the center of Eggers’ latest nightmare.
That restraint feels very Eggers. Rather than laying out every transformation, curse or creature rule ahead of time, the film is being sold on atmosphere, mystery and the threat of something ancient closing in. With Taylor-Johnson, Dafoe and Depp leading the cast, Werwulf looks ready to make old folklore feel nasty again.
In an appropriately eerie bit of timing, the trailer arrived on September 26, 2026 — the night of the Harvest Full Moon. For a film called Werwulf, we’ll happily take the cosmic coordination. The film itself arrives December 25, 2026, giving Christmas Day moviegoers something considerably more sinister than holiday cheer.
