From Doo-Wop to Bella Poarch: “Bad Boy” Gets Another Life
Released in 2023 through Warner Records, “Bad Boy!” was produced by Pink Slip, with Joe Grasso handling mixing and mastering. The songwriting credits also reach backward: Lil Hardin Armstrong and Avon Long, the writers tied to the older song, appear alongside Poarch and the newer track’s contemporary writers.
That is what makes this one more than a wink at an old melody. Bella’s record carries the DNA of the earlier “Bad Boy” directly into a modern pop setting, putting a 1950s vocal idea beside polished 2020s production without pretending the source material came from nowhere.
The Jive Bombers’ “Bad Boy” Had Already Lived Several Lives
The Jive Bombers were a New York R&B vocal group built around lead singer Clarence Palmer with Earl Johnson and brothers Al and William “Pee Wee” Tinney. Their roots stretched through earlier vocal outfits including the Palmer Brothers and Sonny Austin & the Jive Bombers, and members of the group had recorded as The Sparrows as far back as 1949 before the Jive Bombers name took hold in the early 1950s.
By late 1956, they were recording for Savoy Records, and “Bad Boy” became the record that stuck. Palmer’s playful, hiccupping la-la-la delivery gave the laid-back R&B number its instantly recognizable personality, carrying it to No. 7 on the R&B chart and No. 36 on the pop chart in 1957. It would remain the group’s lone charting hit, but clearly one “Bad Boy” was enough to keep traveling.
And even their version had history behind it. Lil Hardin Armstrong had recorded an earlier form of the song as “Brown Gal” in 1936. Versions followed under titles including “Brown Boy” before The Jive Bombers landed on “Bad Boy,” meaning Bella Poarch’s 2023 track is tapping into a musical line that had already been shape-shifting for decades before modern pop ever got its hands on it.
