Rosie O’Donnell Gets Behind a Talk-Show Desk Again — and It Feels Right

Friend of INYIM Rosie O’Donnell made her return to the talk-show desk Monday night, stepping in as guest host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and walking out to the kind of roaring standing ovation that immediately told you the room knew exactly who had arrived.
For us, there is a little extra love attached to this one. Rosie has long been the kind of public figure who still makes time for the little guy. She follows INYIM on Instagram, has popped into our comments (and DM’s) over the years, and has always treated independent voices like ours as worth acknowledging. That matters in an industry where plenty of much smaller names suddenly forget how to see anyone without a blue check or a publicist standing nearby.
So yes, seeing her back behind a television desk felt personal — and deserved.

O’Donnell is guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the week beginning August 17, 2026 while Jimmy Kimmel is on his summer break. And she did not waste much time reminding everyone that she still knows exactly how to work a monologue.
“They said you can’t come home again, but here I am,” she told the crowd before joking that if anyone thought the president hated the show when Jimmy was hosting it, they should probably buckle up for Rosie week.
The monologue quickly became part political comedy, part homecoming and part very Rosie storytelling. She looked back at The Rosie O’Donnell Show, which ran from 1996 to 2002, poked fun at the “Queen of Nice” label and then moved into stories about the life she has built in Ireland.
O’Donnell spoke warmly about the country becoming a refuge for her and her child, joking through stories about Irish flight attendants, impossibly polite drivers, a crossing guard who refused to believe she was actually that Rosie O’Donnell and a pharmacist whose friendliness Rosie hilariously misread as romantic interest.
That last story alone is peak Rosie: she finally worked up the courage to ask the pharmacist to dinner, only to discover the woman was married. Later, the husband apparently greeted her with a perfectly timed “Hello, Romeo.” There are comedians who tell jokes, and then there are people who can turn one awkward pharmacy visit into a whole little movie.
But beneath the punchlines was something sweeter. Rosie repeatedly talked about the kindness she has experienced since moving to Ireland — strangers welcoming her, people remembering her child, and a community that made a turbulent chapter of her life feel a little safer.
It also reminded us why Rosie has always connected so easily with everyday people. Whether it is a crossing guard in Ireland or a tiny independent media account like ours on Instagram, she has never seemed particularly interested in measuring people by how important the industry says they are.

And then came the part we really wanted back: Rosie with a room, a desk and enough time to tell a story properly.
