Rob Lowe Faces One Very Spiteful School Musical in “The Musical”

Get into it! Rob Lowe is about to learn just how dangerous a middle-school musical can become when the guy directing it has a personal score to settle.
The dark comedy The Musical stars Tony Award winner Will Brill as Doug Leibowitz, a frustrated playwright marking time as a theater teacher while dreaming of making it to New York. Things take a deeply petty turn when he discovers that his ex, Abigail — played by Gillian Jacobs — is now dating his nemesis, school principal Brady, played by Lowe.
Doug decides heartbreak alone is not enough. He wants revenge.
The Power of Spite Takes Center Stage
Principal Brady is focused on getting the school onto the Southern California Blue Ribbon Schools list, which gives Doug exactly the opening he needs. Instead of staging the promised production of West Side Story, he secretly recruits his students for an entirely new show called The Heroes.
The goal is not exactly artistic excellence. Doug deliberately creates something so inappropriate that its public debut could wreck Brady’s reputation — all while keeping the principal completely in the dark about what the students are actually rehearsing.
As Doug puts it in the trailer, everybody talks about the power of love. He is much more interested in the power of spite.

The film marks the feature directorial debut of Giselle Bonilla and was written by Alexander Heller. Lowe also serves as a producer.
The Musical premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival before Blue Harbor Entertainment and Variance Films acquired U.S. distribution rights.
The dark comedy opens in theaters nationwide on September 18, 2026.
