You get not one but two Russell fam-bam members.

Father-and-son duo Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell are chatting up the new season of their hit Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the stories spilling out along the way are every bit as entertaining as you’d hope.

The pair recently dropped by Jessie Ware and Lennie Ware’s podcast Table Manners, where the conversation bounced from family memories and filming in Australia to giant spiders, hockey dreams, and Wyatt’s first-ever steps on the set of the beloved 1987 comedy Overboard.

Yes — that Overboard.

And yes, the film starring their shared wife and step-mom, the one and only Goldie Hawn.

That’s a very Russell family sentence if there ever was one.

On ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’

Kurt and Wyatt both play Lee Shaw in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters — the same character at different points in his life.

Wyatt tackles the younger postwar version, while Kurt plays Shaw later in life, grounding the giant-creature chaos in something more human.

Kurt explained that what drew them in was the chance to make the story feel relatable rather than just another monster smash-up.

“These are real people having to deal with a real situation.”

Wyatt Took His First Steps on the Set of ‘Overboard’

One of the sweetest details from the episode came when the family started reminiscing about Overboard.

Wyatt revealed that he took his very first steps while on that set as a baby.

“I took my first steps on that movie.”

That bit of movie-family history only makes the whole Russell-Hawn orbit feel even more timeless.

Kurt the Pilot, Wyatt the Hockey Guy

The episode also served up a reminder that Kurt Russell contains multitudes.

He spoke about flying for 30 years and discovering that aviation ran in the family, explaining that his grandfather had been a champion stunt pilot.

Wyatt, meanwhile, shared that acting was never actually the dream.

Not at first, anyway.

His heart was set on professional hockey, and he admitted he had no real desire to chase the spotlight growing up around sets.

“I have no desire to be in the spotlight.”

That changed over time, but only after he decided he’d do things his own way.

Their Shared Spider Horror in Australia

Now for the nightmare fuel.

While filming in Australia, Wyatt recalled waking up to find a huntsman spider the size of his head in the room while his young son remained perfectly calm about it.

He was not.

Neither was Kurt.

Turns out the pair share a very strong anti-spider, anti-snake family phobia.

A giant Australian spider will humble even a Russell.

Ready Meals, Chaos and Family Food Memories

The episode also got deliciously domestic.

Wyatt revealed that when he and Kurt were living together while filming, they embraced full bachelor mode — which meant stocking up on ready-to-eat meals instead of going out.

At one point, Wyatt, Kurt, and their shared agent all sat around eating microwaveable spaghetti bolognese in foil trays.

Not exactly glamorous.

But very funny.

He also spoke lovingly about the chaos of family dinners, Goldie Hawn’s cooking, and the kinds of basic comfort foods that still stick with him.

Why the Episode Works

What makes this Table Manners episode so fun is that it doesn’t just give you promo chatter for Monarch.

It gives you the Russells being the Russells — funny, warm, self-aware, and full of stories that make the family feel both larger-than-life and weirdly relatable.
