Well get this, when Rita isn't putting her signature touch on thee hit Netflix show "One Day At A Time", she's gonna be reprising her role and strutting on her dancing heels once again to return to the streets of good ol' New York, New York!
She's signed on to join the cast of Steven Spielberg’s updated version of West Side Story. But the best part is that Rita herself will also serve as executive producer on the flick. Talk about a full circle. Not to mention how inspiring.
For those who may not be musical buffs, this is originally an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Romeo and Juliet, which in this particular case tells the story of the star-crossed love between hottie mctoddie Tony played by Richard Beymer and of course his infamous co-star Natalie Woods.
In the original, Moreno played the bombacious Anita (our preferred character), the best friend of Maria (Natalie Wood). But just like the old tale goes, true talent shall always prevail and shine bright like a diamond.
Where there's Jennifer Hudson's Oscar-winning scene-stealing role, originally intended to be Beyonce's movie moment, there was first and foremost Rita. Her character Anita sang the signature song “America”. After that, the rest is cinema film history. She went on to win the academy award for best-supporting actress.
However, in this new West Side Story depiction, Moreno is playing "Valentina, a re-conceived and expanded version of the character of Doc, the owner of the corner store in which Tony, played by Elgort, works."
Genius director Steven Spielberg went on to say, “From our earliest discussions, we wanted to include Rita Moreno in our production. Her Anita is one of the greatest musical performances ever filmed, and a personal favorite of mine. We created an original role for her, and we feel beyond fortunate that Rita will bring her extraordinary gifts as an actress, as well as her deep understanding of West Side Story to this production as an executive producer.”
Here ye here ye, let's get ready to dance and love again with the rare bird and American treasure that is Rita Moreno! An EGOT( Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and a Tony) winner, an artist that is truly cut from a different cloth, and they don't make that fabric anymore.
Now let's go down memory lane and get movin' and groovin' with the best of them!
