Marmalade’ & More Top 10 Hot 100 Hits Featuring 3 or More Female

“This week, Ariana Grande’s “34 + 35” jumps to a new high on the Billboard Hot
100 (dated Jan. 30), catapulting all the way to No. 2, held from the top spot
only by Olivia Rodrigo’s monster breakthrough hit “Drivers License.” The
former reaches its current peak thanks in large part to its new remix,
featuring guest rappers Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion, both of whom are now
credited on the song’s listing.
Though last year was a historic year for all-female collabs atop the Hot 100,
you still have to go back two decades to find the last top-two single on the
Hot 100 to feature three or more female soloists. That’s when Christina
Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya and P!nk teamed up to cover Labelle’s 1975 Hot
100-topping hit “Lady Marmalade” for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, resulting in
a No. 1 hit of their own — still to date the only song to top the chart with
more than two credited female artists. (“Heartbreak Hotel,” by Whitney Houston
featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price, also reached No. 2 on the chart in
1999.)
The first such single to hit the Hot 100’s top 10, as well as the most
voluminous in terms of female collaborators, came in 1997, with “Not Tonight”
— a No. 6 hit for Lil Kim off the Nothing to Lose soundtrack, also featuring
Da Brat, Left Eye, Missy Elliott and Angie Martinez.
Missy is a common element on several of the nine total all-female Hot 100 top
10 hits to feature more than two female artists. Along with “Lady Marmalade”
(which she co-produced and provides the intro for, despite not being a
credited artist on the song) and “Not Tonight,” she also appears along with
Mocha as featured artists on Nicole’s “Make It Hot” (No. 5, 1998) and again
with Lil Kim on Keyshia Cole’s “Let It Go” (No. 7, 2007).
The lone top 10 hit to feature a gender-split lineup that nonetheless contains
three credit female artists came in 2002, with Irv Gotti Presents The Inc.’s
“Down 4 U,” which features Ashanti, Charlie Baltimore and Vita, as well as
male rapper Ja Rule. In addition, such all-star charity singles as USA For
Africa’s “We Are the World” and Artists Stand Up to Cancer’s “Just Stand Up!”
each boasts many female hitmakers — the latter even featuring an all-women
lineup — but did not credit any of them individually on their official chart
listing.
