Since we’re on the subject of birthdays! Gladys Knight was born on May 28 in 1944. Originally known as the ‘Empress of Soul’, Gladys is an R&B/soul singer-songwriter, humanitarian, and author. Folks are more familiar with Gladys’ hits she sang during the 1960s and 1970s. Signed to Motown, her group Gladys Knight & the Pips, consisted of her brother and her cousins.

In 1961, the first single “Every Beat of My Heart” for the group, became a #1 R&B hit and followed suite with a 6 pop hits including the Grammy-winning “Midnight Train to Georgia” which soared to #1 all over the world.
