A $1 Tuesday night gig, Courtney Love, Kurt Cobain, and twenty-five years of alternative rock history.

In the latest episode of one of our preferred current podcasts, “The Magnificent Others W/ Billy Corgan,” the bandleader extraordinaire welcomes a chosen family member to visit the pod studio — Melissa Auf der Maur.
From profound convo’s about Billy, Melissa, Kurt Cobain, and the goddess — and completely misunderstood — Courtney Love, there is twenty five years to get out.

The two revisit how a humble $1 Tuesday night gig ended up fire-starting one of rock’s most enduring — and surprise — friendships.
Billy recounts the exact moment the night went sideways.
“As I was playing, a beer bottle smashed against my guitar.”
Instead of stopping the show, Billy did the most rock-and-roll thing possible.
“I dove into the crowd and started choking the guy who threw it.”
And then — because the show must go on — he simply walked back on stage.
“I got back on stage, picked up the guitar, and finished the song.”
Melissa remembers that moment instantly sealing the deal.
“That is when you captured my heart.”

The pair also divulge how Billy secretly recommended Melissa to Courtney Love, and why she almost said no — not once, but twice.
Along the way, Melissa also drops one of the most poetic lines of the entire episode when speaking about the bass guitar.
“The bass is the instrument that is unnoticed — but no one can live without.”
It’s a beautiful metaphor for the era itself.
Melissa also reflects on the generation of musicians that came out of that time.
“We might go down as the last true analog generation.”
