"The American Music Awards will move to 2025, with host network CBS planning to run an AMA 50th anniversary special in October in the time period where the awards show was originally supposed to run.

CBS and AMA producer Dick Clark Productions says that it will run the 50th anniversary special on Sunday, Oct. 6, which will “feature themed highlights from AMAs’ expansive show archives, each culminating with an original performance or artist interview. Segments will look back on the evolution of specific artists and genres at the AMAs, as well as award and performance milestones.”

Meanwhile, the AMAs themselves will shift to May 2025, meaning that the awards show will have gone three years off the air, with the last installment airing on ABC in 2022.

It will be the first time that the AMAs run in the spring, and they will come just a few months after CBS airs The Grammy Awards. Networks like CBS have been stocking up on live events in recent years, trying to add more “must-see” programming to their lineups, with most viewership of scripted entertainment having shifted to streaming.

Dick Clark created the AMAs in 1974, and it remains “the largest fan-voted awards program,” per DCP.
