Woopsies! Cynthia NixonCynthia Nixon Addresses Sara Ramirez's (Aka Che) “And Just Like That” Exit...
"The "Sex and the City" alum says she and Ramirez still keep in touch.
Cynthia Nixon has come to terms with Sara Ramirez's departure from And Just Like That — and the end of the polarizing relationship between their two characters, Miranda Hobbes and Che Diaz.
"I think for Miranda, Miranda and Che were really pretty done," Nixon tells Entertainment Weekly of her former corporate lawyer and Ramirez's comedian. "I think that Miranda and Che had kind of run the gamut of what they were going to be to each other."
Che was introduced in the very first episode of Max's Sex and the City revival, as the host of a podcast that Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) regularly appeared on. Che and Miranda soon crossed paths and began a romantic relationship, which proved divisive among fans. Some viewers were angered from the start because Miranda's feelings about Che contributed to her divorce from fan-favorite character Steve (David Eigenberg), whom she met way back on SATC.
The backlash eventually prompted a response from Ramirez on social media. "I am not the fictional characters I have played, nor am I responsible for the things that are written for them to say," they wrote on Instagram last August.
"I am a human being, an artist, an actor," Ramirez added. "And we are living in a world that has become increasingly hostile toward anyone who dares to free themselves from the gender binary, or disrupt the mainstream."
Miranda and Che broke up in season 2 of And Just Like That, and EW reported in February that Ramirez would not be back for season 3.
Nixon says that if Ramirez were to return to AJLT in the future, it probably wouldn't be to further explore Miranda and Che's dynamic. "If Sara was on the show, I think it would be more Carrie and Che," she notes.
As for Nixon and Ramirez themselves, they remain on good terms. "I miss Sara," Nixon says. "I mean, Sara and I are in quite a lot of touch about Palestine and what's happening. And so we talk quite a bit. And they came to my opening night of my play [The Seven Year Disappear], which was really lovely."
Ramirez isn't the only And Just Like That actor who won't be returning next season. Karen Pittman, who portrayed Miranda's professor-turned-roommate Nya Wallace, exited the show due to scheduling conflicts.
One new face viewers will see in season 3 is Rosie O'Donnell. The actress and former talk show host will play a character named Mary.
