"The Watcher has officially clocked in 273.2 million hours of watch time on Netflix.According to Deadline, the Ryan Murphy and Ian Brenner-created show raked in another 148.2 million hours of viewing time from fans this past week.The mystery-thriller program, which premiered earlier this month, previously took in 125 million hours during its first week of release.The Watcher is based on Reeves Wiedeman's article The Haunting of a Dream House, which was published in The Cut in 2018.Wiedeman's article was based on a series of true events that transpired in 2014.The show is centered on a family who leave the hustle and bustle of New York City and move into a sizable home in New Jersey.However, they soon become the targets of a figure who terrorizes them through threatening letters and drastic actions.The cast of the star-studded program was led by Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts.Other performers who appeared in the show were Jennifer Coolidge, Noma Dumezweni and Mia Farrow.The Watcher debuted on Netflix on October 13 and ran for a total of seven episodes.The program received mixed to negative reviews from critics and currently holds a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.However, the series quickly became popular with viewers and landed the top spot on Netflix's watch list after its premiere.The number one position was previously held by Murphy's recently-premiered program, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.The filmmaker recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and told the media that he became so engrossed with Wideman's original story to the point that he offered to work on the project without compensation.'I said, "I'm such a fan of this piece and I'm such a fan of this genre that I will write this for free; just let me write it"...And so that's how I got involved,' he recalled.Murphy went on to speak about how his own experience as a father influenced The Watcher's writing process.He stated: 'I instantly thought of my own family and I think that idea of how we're living in a world now where everybody all over the world, I guess, seems under attack in some way and that idea of, "How do I keep my family safe?"'The producer then stated that a particularly difficult question occurred to him while he worked on the program.He said: 'I have three children — and that idea of you work so hard, you get the American dream; what if somebody takes it away?'" - dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-11354669/The-Watcher-keeps-hold-Netflix-clocks-nearly-275-MILLION-hours-watch-time.html
