"After the price of fish spiked over the last year, an aquarium in Japan had to update the menu for their penguins to include some cheaper fish. Annoyingly for the aquarium, the penguins don’t understand the voodoo magic of the economy and have refused to eat some subpar mackerel. Damn. Inflation is truly affecting everyone, even flightless birds!
The penguins made headlines after video evidence circulated of their rejection of low-cost mackerel for dinner. While funny to everyone else, the aquarium is a little pissed. (“Uh, so are we!” said the penguins). via UPI:
A video filmed at the aquarium shows the penguins stubbornly refusing to accept offerings of the cheaper fish from keepers.
“Even if they’ll take it in their beaks, they’ll just spit it out,” Hiroki Shimamoto, the head zookeeper at the aquarium, told VICE World News.
Aquarium workers said the penguins will begrudgingly eat the cheaper fish if it is mixed in with some aji.
“Ideally, they would like to have a full aji, but they are patiently eating mackerel,” Shimamoto told TV Asahi.
The aquarium has said that they could raise the cost of admission to compensate for the spike in food prices but have opted not to do it. While great for us, it’s not so enjoyable for our avian friends. And this is how we’ve arrived at videos featuring picky penguins!" - Dlisted.com
