"The Godfather of Soul continues to resonate.
Two of music’s biggest heavyweights — from very different generations and genres — have partnered to bring James Brown’s life story to the basic cable masses.
Mick Jagger and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson will produce a four-part documentary series on the late, great soul legend for the A&E Network.
Announced Friday, “James Brown: Say it Loud” is expected to premiere next year.
The trailblazing soul music pioneer, who died in 2006, would have been 90 in May 2023.

“I am thrilled to be producing the four-part documentary series with A&E delving into the fascinating life of James Brown,” Jagger said.
The Rolling Stones frontman previously produced Alex Gibney’s Peabody Award-winning HBO documentary “Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown” and the Tate Taylor-helmed big screen biopic “Get On Up” starring Chadwick Boseman.
“He was a brilliant performer who inspired me from the beginning and was deeply committed to the Civil Rights movement,” he added. “I have always admired James and learned so much from him. I look forward to bringing the series to life.”
Questlove, leader of Grammy Award-winning hip-hop band The Roots, is riding a wave of success from his Oscar-nominated documentary, “Summer of Soul (Or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised),” which chronicles a series of Harlem concerts in 1969 known as the Black Woodstock.

The best-selling author, director, producer and Black culture anthropologist’s bandmate Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter is also an executive producer on the Brown series. .
“The life of James Brown is significant not only to understand his immense musical impact, which inspires us and other artists to this day, but also for the deep and lasting impression he has had on American culture,” Thompson and Trotter said in joint statement. “Brown’s life is a crucial and timely story of struggle, redemption, and self-identity and we are honored to have the chance to share it.”
A&E promises “James Brown: Say It Loud” will explore Brown’s “legacy as a musical force, cultural catalyst, and dominant Black creative voice” … “through exclusive interviews with friends, family, collaborators and protégés as well as his beloved music catalog” and will include never-before-seen archival footage.
