INYIM Media End Of Year Archive: 2020's Tones And I’s ‘Dance Monkey’ Reaches 2 Billion Plays on Spotify!

"Tones And I just scored an early Christmas present that you can’t find in any store.

The Australian singer and songwriter’s breakthrough hit “Dance Monkey” on Tuesday (Dec. 22) moved past two billion streams on Spotify, a rare feat that places Tones in the record books several times over.

Tones (real name Toni Watson) is the first female artist to reach the milestone, and the first Aussie.

ARTISTS MENTIONED:

21 Savage.

Ed Sheeran.

Post Malone.

Tones And I.

Indeed, just two tracks have accumulated more streams on the platform, Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” (at 2.7 billion) and Post Malone’s “Rockstar” featuring 21 Savage (2.079 billion), both of which were released in 2017.

Ever since Tones unleashed “Dance Monkey” in May 2019, she’s been smashing records left and right.

The single went on the rule the U.K. chart for 11 weeks, a record for a solo female artist, and led the ARIA Singles Chart for 24 non-consecutive weeks, a streak unchallenged by any other artist.

“Dance Monkey” also went top 5 in the U.S., she became the inaugural leader on Billboard’s Alternative Songwriters list and Tones went to No. 1 on the Hot 100 Songwriters’ Chart.

All told, it reached No. 1 in more than 30 countries and it's the most "Shazamed" song of all time.

In the years prior to its release, Tones honed her craft busking in Byron Bay, a popular beach getaway in northern New South Wales. She’s still got love of the streets. On Monday, she delivered a surprise performance on Melbourne’s Bourke Street in support of local shops, restaurants, cafes and bars recovering from the impact of COVID-19.

“Dance Monkey hit 2 BILLION STREAMS this morning and I got to busk yesterday,” Tones tweeted. “Thank you everyone that’s crazy! Go support other buskers and Aussie artists!”
