: Extra, Extra! Read All The After-Article Offerings: Pledgemusic.com previously asked Donna and Niki about their iconic past as well as what awaits in their upcoming future!
You mentioned that you met 25 years ago. Do you remember how exactly you first met?
Nikki:I believe I officially met Donna at the “Who’s That Girl” audition. There were many young ladies there in line to audition, and I had quickly flown in from another job I was doing in Las Vegas. There was one position open and there was one week before Madonna was officially opening the tour in Japan. This meant the person who got the job must fit the costumes (already made) and learn all the music and choreography in that week. Our blend was instantaneous! Our real friendship developed over that time and was brought even closer when we were the only girls on the “Blond Ambition” tour. We were always together and singing and dancing and — our favorite – napping!
Was the friendship pretty instant in that moment?
Donna: Yes we both loved music, grew up in music and we were having so much fun with the show and traveling around the world! We shared so many adventures on this first tour and we were so young! Our friendship would deepen over time. I loved hanging out with Niki on our time off and loved how we brought out the inner child in each other!
You mentioned your kinship is not only musical but spiritual. That’s an interesting bond. What exactly does that mean?
Nikki: When I use the word spiritual I don’t simply mean it as a religious term. However, Donna and I do share many common beliefs about spirituality. I believe there are people you meet in life that resonate with you on many levels. You may come from completely different backgrounds and environments, but you recognize commonality in each other. Obviously, we love music but our shared love of nature, our respect for quiet time and “lowly listening”, our reverence for our elders who have paved a way for us, and our love of animals are just some of the things that have held this kinship together.
Moreover, the respect we have for one another and our choice to lean in to the “learning moments” of our relationship have strengthened this kinship. For me, I think this comes from a “spiritual place,” a place that Donna and I have chosen to abide in on this life’s journey. I believe Donna and I are “seekers” and part of “seeking” we’ve been honored to do together.
Donna: We both naturally followed a spiritual path as our lives evolved, and expressed that in our own musical careers as well. We share the same values and reasons why we are making music to touch people’s hearts and to heal our own hearts.
You’ve worked with so many amazing artists over the years, so what makes this collaboration so special when you’re able to sing together?
Nikki: The special part about singing together is that it feels effortless! We seem to know where to go when singing together. I also believe we have just begun to tap into the places we can go musically!
Donna: It is effortless and soooo much fun! I know how nostalgic it is for so many people to see us working together again and that feels really good. I feel we have a deep purpose to share our music and inspire others.
When you work together with an artist on the level of Madonna, what do you take primarily take away to apply to your own careers?
Donna: She taught me to look inside myself and ask myself the right questions for what I really want in my life to be happy. I learned from her that I can be a leader/producer with my own music as well. I can be strong and focused in asking for what I want and not settle for less. Unfortunately, I never had a strong role model growing up that taught me this until I met Madonna.
Nikki: For me, the best take away from working with an artist like Madonna is to understand hard work can lead to great reward! You must be willing to do the work. All great artists have shown us that, the determination to work hard is 90% of the journey. That’s why it can look like play when the public sees it, because they have put the time in and done the work of preparation!
You’re coming together for this EP, but are there hopes for more than this as well?
Nikki: Always hoping, praying and knowing that there is so much more music ahead for us.
Donna: Yes! We have so much music in us. Every day I think of another song that we can sing. I would love to collaborate with Niki to sing on a film as well as with other artists that inspire us. We hope to have our EP out early next year!"
