The writer and Warhol accomplice shares his ambitions to become a grumpy old man
“I think it’s good to be crotchety,” says Glenn O’Brien, an alumnus of Warhol's Factory who has just jumped ship as GQ’s much-loved ‘Style Guy’ to become editor-in-chief at Maxim. “I’m actually too youthful. I’m trying to become more grumpy and old.” Pipe dreams, perhaps, for the cultural provocateur who serves up sage advice such as, “Never date anyone not containing carbon,” and insists he stopped wearing a tie because of the Iran nuclear deal.

O'Brien, a compulsive book collector, offers us a tour of his East Village apartment, where a scattering of typewriters, Basquiat sketches (the young artist would come around to doodle while O'Brien wrote), and chainsaws are some of the many treasures he's amassed over the years.
