With a story they sounds of something out of a Hollywood blockbuster movie (which we would cast all our favorite models as the stars) Fashionista.com has a update on the head scratching Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2012 collection theft that occurred earlier this month right before its press release.
People (including us) were so dumbfounded upon hearing that Marc Jacobs’ spring 2012 collection had been stolen in London, some thought it might have been an elaborate publicity stunt or a prank. However, we now know it really happened since there is a real report from the Metropolitan Police in London.
According to HuffPo UK, the clothes were stolen “in the Mount Street area” of London near the Marc Jacobs boutique where the label’s UK press day was set to take place, presumably out of the courier van parked outside, which had transported the jazz age-inspired collection from Paris.
Police also estimated value of stolen materials to be around £40,000 or $63,528 based on current exchange rates. The culprit is still unknown but is suspected to be counterfeiters. Interestingly, an anonymous source from Marc Jacobs told CNN that theft is not unusual for the company. It’s also still unclear how many samples were stolen. We’re not sure if £40,000 is based on retail or wholesale value, but either way it seems a little low for an entire collection.
Still, we feel pretty bad for the MJ team–couldn’t the thieves have at least waited until after market and press appointments were over? Impressively, the company still has hope and is even offering an award to anyone who happens to see “chic truck drivers cruising around Europe dressed in #SS12 Collection”:
