Every day we are moving away further and further away to what some of us (pre 1989)remember as everyday electronics. Sony has announced that the Sony Walkman is kerplunk!
After 31 years and over 200 million units sold, Sony is officially putting the cassette model Walkman out to pasture. Introduced in 1979, the portable tape player defined the following 10-plus years of mobile music playback. It was even a leader in the era of optical media, with its Walkman line of portable CD players eventually known as Discman. But in the era of the iPod, the brand name has diminished in value. Radios and digital media players still go by the name Walkman, but the moniker has always referred to the tape-playing model in the collective mind. And as Sony announced that it shipped its last batch of tape-playing Walkmen back in April, we couldn't help shed a tear for the ubiquitous '80s gadget.
You'll still be able to find cassette-playing Walkmen if you happen to live in Asia or the Middle-East. Sony has licensed the name to a number of Chinese manufacturers who will continue to produce the portable tape players. But if you're hoping to get your hands on an authentic Sony Walkman manufactured in Japan, you'll have to settle for an MP3 player. [switched.com]
Dlisted.com puts the death of the Walkman in a familiar description of the silver bulky box that was so hi-tech.
You sat by the radio and waited until they played your favorite songs and then you hit record really fast after the DJ finished talking. I know, it's gross when the stupid f***ing DJ keeps spitting out his verbal masturbation even after the song starts. Like doesn't the dumb ass know you're trying to make the perfect mix-tape! And since you didn't have any blank tapes, you had to put Scotch tape over the hole on one of your old cassettes. Your ass even made a cover using a glitter pen and magazine pictures.
Well, I know you were going to go to KMart today to buy a Walkman for your friend to listen to your amazing mix-tape on and really get intimate with the music, but sadly you're going to have to get a regular old Boom Box instead, because Sony birthed out their last Walkman in April. They're closing their legs and they won't push out anymore. The Walkman is now an artifact. It's the end of a seriously ANNOYING era, because my Walkman would eat the shit out of batteries and the play button would always pop up for no reason!
Vintage is the word now.
